Garmin launches a new simple activity monitor after a break of several years
The VivoSmart 5 adds several useful upgrades to the familiar design.
Garmin introduced the VivoSmart 5, a new model in the highly acclaimed VivoSmart series of activity monitors. The new activity monitor is small and very lightweight like its predecessor. However, the screen is now noticeably larger and easier to read, and the bands can be changed. The biggest difference is the striking and much more convenient physical button replacing the previous touch button. The screen itself is still touch-sensitive and menus are navigated using gestures as on the previous model. According to the manufacturer, the VivoSmart 5 battery lasts seven days on a single charge, provided that the heart rate monitor and sleep quality tracker have been deactivated.
The new activity monitor has 14 different activity monitoring modes, including yoga, HIIT workout and breathing exercises. Unlike older models, the VivaSmart features a GPS, which means that the user can track running and cycling distance, speed and pace when connecting to a smartphone. However, Garmin’s sport watches with integrated GPS are better suited to those who need more accurate data or data storage independent of the phone.
But if you are looking for a very lightweight and minimalist activity monitor that would offer high-quality sleep tracking and blood oxygen level and stress level monitoring, the VivoSmart 5 is an excellent choice. Of course, the VivoSmart 5 also functions as an alarm clock, displays incoming notifications to your phone, counts steps and calculates calories burned.
The price of the VivoSmart 5 is around 150 euros. Its biggest competitor is the similarly priced Fitbit Charge 5, which features a large screen, integrated GPS and Fitbit Pay contactless payment support. Fitbit’s disadvantage, however, is its size and weight. This gives those interested in an activity monitor the option to choose between Garmin’s lighter and more discreet VivoSmart and the larger Charge 5 with more features.
The Garmin VivoSmart 5 will be available for purchase in the coming weeks.
